That is a beautiful coin.  Persistence pays!

I had a similar thought to Evan's - what must it have meant to lose such a coin?  Out of curiosity, I've been trying to figure out what kind of purchasing power 8R would carry in 1791.  (The internet can tell you anything about the present, but historical data are harder to find.)  I haven't found the numbers to prove it, but my suspicion is that this rare, beautiful coin is actually worth LESS today than it was when it was lost.  Think about it: how much would a coin collector pay for something like this, and how long could you feed your family on that amount of money?  I'd be awfully surprised if you couldn't have done better back in 1791.

Which is not meant to detract from, but rather to add to your appreciation of this amazing find. Congratulations!

Bri that Reale is B-E-A-Utiful!!!!!!!!!!!  In the world of coins the condition means everything, and that thing is in pristine condition!!!  That site should be hit hard by a two box system, as should every cellar hole site...  Anyways all I would be able to think about if I found that would be who lost such a large coin and how much of a financial impact that one coin my have had on them, I would also wonder about how it got from Spain to the US, and I would also incessantly wonder what life was like at the time it was made, what we knew about the world and what had and had not happened in the world at that time in history...  The possibilities are endless and through that incredibly beautiful specimen of a coin there is that story and you are part of it now Bri, may you and all of us bring these lost stories back and here's to finding many more pieces of history that was lost.  Congrats Bri, you are now the owner of every little kid's dream of treasure a true piece of eight!!! -cowboy1

I notice the "G" is flat due to a weak strike...  too bad, it would have been a decent coin.  All kidding aside, this site showed so much promise when we found it, had all the makings of a site holding dozens of goodies.  But this place was HAMMERED.   2 guys, 10 hours over 2 days and one find.  A dam nice find indeed but nothing else, and I mean nothing.... oh wait, a thimble, he found that too. Whoever or whomever swung it before even went as far as to disassemble some of the foundation. And they also did their homework because the hole was not in the easiest of places to locate. I cannot even fathom the things they found.  At one point I had been swinging for 2 hours without finding a target to dig. I say we collectively may have around 15 targets over 2 days, and 90% of those were shotgun shells... and you knew it was gonna be a shotgun shell before you even started to dig.   Another crazy thing about this place is that the well was about 100 feet in circumference and still full of water, all the round stones making up the well walls still stacked perfectly.  It was a neat site but I don't know if I'd go back, by the end of the second day I was sleeping on a giant rock while Brian was off in the woods running from bees again.  Well as always, unbelievable find Bri... you are scary.  The things you have found over the past couple of years is incomprehensible. BUT!  If there is EVER a competition to find clad at colonial sites I will destroy all takers.

I figured i would give this its own thread...I soaked the coin in water and dabbed of the dirt...I think it came out awesome...I cant believe the condition, I feel extremely lucky to have found this coin...We hunted 3 hours and i dug 4 shot gun shells...We decided to stick it out anyways...over the next 2 hours I got a loud signal just over the stone wall and i thought it was gonna be a good one....But i was suprised to see a large silver coin....We both put in 10 hours at this site with very little to show...But the one coin made it worth it..I even found some more bee's...I was stung 3 times  -eek ...  Thanks for all the kind words on the other thread. -rotfllmao1

I officially hate Brian for life now..... -bow -bow -bow

yes , agreed the official " hate Brian for life " line startes here behind Steve and i. ( : ( : ( :

You'll puke.  I may end up posting it... I just have to kill him first.

your right , i almost puked out my soda out when i saw this. ( : ( :

killing him is an option Fog but requires a a large enough hole to be dug to burry him in and knowing Brian and his luck you'll be laying him just on top of a oaktree hoard cashe of coins  -rotfllmao1 -rotfllmao1

congrats Brian , that massive chunk of silver is a real beauty of a coin. -bow
